Arctic Spa Filtration Settings, Filter Cycles and Purge Guide

Quick answer: Arctic Spa filtration settings are series-specific. Custom Series uses a Filter/Settings workflow, Classic uses Water Care schedules, and Core commonly uses FS (start), Fd (duration), and FF (frequency). Spa Boy and Onzen add their own production settings, so do not copy one panel’s numbers into another.

Filtration settings by Arctic Spa series

Series/system Main controls What not to assume
Custom Series Ozone duration if equipped, Onzen duration if equipped, filtration duration (Fd), and filtration frequency (FF) Core FS/Fd/FF button steps do not apply.
Classic Series Water Care schedule with day, start time, duration, and a second optional schedule Menu availability depends on software and controller.
Core Series FS start hour, Fd duration, FF cycles per day; Onzen uses oS/od/oF when installed Do not set Fd to zero; the official manual says that is not recommended.
Spa Boy Version 1 R1 Filtration cycles also create sanitizer-production opportunities The documented default is version-specific and can be changed for bather load.

Custom Series filtration settings

  1. Use the Filter key to enter the settings workflow.
  2. If ozone is installed, set the ozone duration shown by the controller.
  3. If Onzen is installed, set its production duration for the exact water-care program.
  4. Set filtration duration (Fd) from the available controller range.
  5. Set filtration frequency (FF) from the available daily-cycle range.
  6. Press the Filter key at the final step to save and begin a filtration cycle immediately when that behavior is desired.

The documented Custom sequence begins with a short purge: pump 2, pump 3, and the blower run for about 20 seconds when those components are installed, followed by pump 1 on low speed. Manual use of a pump, blower, or light can temporarily interrupt the cycle; the manual describes automatic restart after the interruption period.

Classic Series Water Care schedules

On documented Classic controls, open Settings → Water Care, select the Standard profile, then set the active days, start time, and duration. A second filtration schedule can be added when the controller/software supports it. The filtration icon indicates the cycle is active and can blink when a user-operated accessory temporarily suspends it.

Do not confuse a schedule that is not currently active with a failed circulation pump. Check the clock, selected days, profile, and programmed duration before diagnosing hardware.

Core Series FS, Fd, FF, and Onzen settings

  • FS: filtration start hour.
  • Fd: duration of each filtration cycle. The documented controller allows 0–24 hours and warns that 0 is not recommended.
  • FF: filtration frequency, or the number of cycles per day.
  • oS / od / oF: Onzen start, duration, and frequency when that option is installed.

The Core manual warns that a large difference between the water temperature and setpoint can keep the heater running longer than the programmed filtration period. That is normal control logic, not proof the schedule failed.

Spa Boy filtration and sanitizer production

The Spa Boy Version 1 R1 manual documents a default of four two-hour filtration cycles spaced six hours apart. It also explains that, after a software update, many normal-use spas can use four one-hour cycles while heavier bather load may need longer filtration. Use the spa’s actual water clarity, chemistry, bather load, and dealer guidance rather than treating either number as universal.

For system identification and safe setting changes, use the Spa Boy versus Onzen guide.

What filter purge actually does

A filter purge is the brief automatic operation of pumps and, where installed, the blower at the start of a cycle. It moves standing water through plumbing before normal low-speed filtration begins. It does not mean draining the spa, adding a plumbing purge chemical, or bypassing the filter.

If a pump expected during the purge does not run, the spa shows a current or flow error, or the breaker trips, stop changing schedule values and use the troubleshooting guide.

When to adjust filtration

Observation Reasonable owner check Do not do this
Cloudy water after heavy use Test sanitizer and pH, inspect the correct filter type, then consider a temporary schedule increase under the manual. Do not assume more filtration replaces sanitizer or balanced water.
Cycle never appears to start Check clock, active days, start time, duration, and profile. Do not rewrite every setting before confirming the panel family.
Weak circulation or FLO Check water level, intake, valves, filter restriction, air lock, and actual pump movement. Do not max the schedule to hide a hydraulic fault.
Filter indicator blinks during use Allow the documented interruption period to end. Do not treat the icon alone as a flow-switch failure.

Filter maintenance still controls flow

Stock Progressive Pro Filters are sealed layered media. The official path is full-cartridge replacement. An unofficial teardown can separate and rinse the internal stack, but it permanently opens the assembly, is tedious to rebuild, and cannot restore the media to new condition. Reusable pleated filters used with Kit v3 can be removed, rinsed, cleaned, and reused. See the filter replacement cross-reference.

After a drain/refill, use the drain and refill guide so a low water level or air lock is not mistaken for a schedule problem.

FAQs

What do FS, Fd, and FF mean on an Arctic Spa?

On documented Core controls, FS is the filtration start time, Fd is filtration duration, and FF is filtration frequency. Custom and Classic menus can use different labels and workflows.

What is the default Spa Boy filtration schedule?

The documented Spa Boy Version 1 R1 manual describes four two-hour filtration cycles spaced six hours apart, while also describing a later one-hour option for many normal-use situations. Treat that as version-specific, not universal.

What does filter purge mean on an Arctic Spa?

A purge is the short startup of pumps and, when installed, the blower at the beginning of a filtration cycle to move standing water through plumbing. It is not a drain or chemical purge.

Why is the filtration icon blinking?

The documented controls can blink the filtration icon when the cycle is temporarily suspended by manual pump, blower, or light operation. It normally resumes after the interruption period.

Should I run filtration 24 hours a day?

Not by default. Match the schedule to the exact controller, sanitizer system, bather load, and water condition. Continuous filtration can be a diagnostic or special-use choice but is not automatically better.

Can a wrong filtration setting cause FLO?

A schedule alone is not the only cause, but restricted filters, low water, closed valves, air locks, weak pump flow, or a faulty flow switch can produce a true flow warning. Diagnose the code rather than only increasing runtime.
