What can cause an HL shutdown?
The code identifies the measured over-temperature condition; it does not identify one universal failed part. Causes include restricted water flow, a pump or valve problem, a heater-control fault, a displaced or failed probe, and an actual excessively hot water condition.
Filter restriction belongs on the flow checklist. With stock Progressive filters, replace a restricted sealed cartridge. Do not open or rinse internal depth media. With reusable pleated filters, rinse and inspect the cartridge, then replace it if cleaning does not restore flow.
What HL is not
HL is not the same as normal water reaching its set temperature. It is also not a code that Kit v3 directly fixes. An adapter can simplify filter maintenance on a supported spa, but it does not repair the heater, probes, pump, flow switch, controller, valves, or wiring.
HL compared with related codes
FLO and ER 00 identify no flow while pump 1 is running. FLC and ER 01 identify a flow switch that reads closed while pump 1 is off. HPt identifies a failed heater-probe attachment test, Hd identifies a disconnected high-limit probe, and Prr identifies a spa-temperature probe problem. These codes can appear near the same event, but each has a separate documented meaning. Record every code before cycling power so a technician receives the complete sequence.
Information to give the service technician
Provide the model, model year, serial information, displayed code, whether HL flashed or remained steady, independently measured water temperature, recent drain/refill history, pump behavior, and any other fault. That evidence is more useful than replacing random parts.
When service is required
- HL returns after the spa cools and power is cycled once.
- The water temperature is near or above 112°F (44.5°C).
- The heater barrel, wiring, or equipment area appears overheated.
- Circulation is weak after the filter path and water level are corrected.
- A probe code, breaker trip, burning smell, leak, or abnormal pump sound accompanies HL.
Do not open the control pack or test energized heater circuits unless you are qualified. Arctic Spas requires electrical service to be performed safely by trained personnel.
After the code clears
Do not treat a cleared display as proof that the cause is gone. Confirm the independent water temperature is normal, pump 1 produces normal circulation, the filter path is unrestricted, and the heater operates without another HL, FLO, FLC, or probe message. Stop use immediately if the water continues heating beyond the set point.
